Rhinoplasty - What is Rhinoplasty
The top cosmetic surgical procedure in 2000 was rhinoplasty, with 389,155 procedures performed and is the highest male cosmetic surgery procedure by a significant amount. The number of plastic surgery procedures performed is continuing to grow in every age group, with 7.4 million people having undergone cosmetic procedures in 2000 that has continued to increase. Even in a time of economic hardships, the number of people requesting a cosmetic surgery procedure remained constant. There have been major societal shifts in the opinion of cosmetic surgery, not only has it become more widely accepted and performed, but it is not just reserved for the rich and famous.
About two thirds of cosmetic patients have family incomes of less than $50,000 per year, making cosmetic surgery procedures such as rhinoplasty more accessible to people of a lesser income than the Hollywood stars. While rhinoplasty procedures are still one of the top cosmetic surgical procedures performed, there has been a decrease in rhinoplasty while other cosmetic surgery has increased due to a more accepting view of ethnic beauty opposed to the traditional image of beauty of the past. At the same time, people are no longer afraid of talking openly about their cosmetic procedures.
The openness Americans have developed with rhinoplasty and other cosmetic procedures shows how in the days of improving overall health and wellness Americans want to look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside. With the growing openness also comes the danger of beginning to view rhinoplasty and other cosmetic surgery procedures as such a common occurrence that safety is overlooked. There is an alarming number of reported botched jobs as rhinoplasty and other cosmetic surgery patients have been trying to save a few bucks instead of take the time to investigate who is performing their surgeries or learning what risks are associated to the procedure.
